‘Mainstream’ trip to UGANDA – 22 July – 5 August 2018

This summer we’ll be visiting our friends in Uganda – & have some partners who’d love to work with you

This is a 2-week, dual-centre trip. We’ll begin by running a teacher-training conference in Kampala, working with schools where we currently have 15 sponsored children. We’ll be using our time and skills to work with local teachers in link schools in order to help implement some of the training.

We’ll then move on to JENGA, based in Mbale, whom we’re excited to be partnering with. Our longer-term volunteer, Rhonda, has been working with 15 schools and the local government to see how we can make a lasting impact through teacher-training and skill-sharing so the benefits last beyond our trup. There’s loads going on, with lots of opportunities to share and learn new skills. Our conference in Mbale Summer 2015 attracted 90 teachers for 2 days, and was a great experience for all involved. We’re also excited to be partnering with the British Council in Mbale, who are doing a great job there. And just for fun, we’ll arrange trips to the source of the Nile, some waterfalls and some traditional dancing.

Uganda School for the Deaf trip – 22 July – 5 August 2018

The school has around 200 students, aged from nursery through to upper primary school; most are residential, giving them a chance to communicate using sign language in their community. Some children have additional special needs and many have low self-esteem. We’ll be working on building confidence not only with the children but alongside the adults who care for and love them each day. There will be training opportunities for teachers and parents. We’ll also be inviting a few other Deaf schools to benefit from the training and learning what’s going on for the Deaf community in Uganda.

WHO WE NEED We need people with an abundance of compassion and of experience working with children who are deaf and have special needs, and who can work alongside the teachers to develop an accessible and exciting curriculum. Any people working in therapy, or with SEN experience, would also be most welcome for this trip!
